Inspired by wildlife

I was very pleased to see some very enthusiastic reading by two of our Year 6 pupils this morning. Carlton and Haruun have been very inspired by their learning about wildlife. I am looking forward to seeing their factual report writing about Peregrine Falcons and their other favourite animals.

Attendance

Our attendance figure so far this academic year is 96.5%. This is significantly higher than this time last year and will help us achieve our end of year target of 95.5%.

Thank you for all your support in making sure your children come to school as frequently as they can and avoid booking holidays or appointments during school term time. We all know, the more children attend, the more they will learn.

Carnival Award

We had some very special guests join with us today in our Singing Assembly. Cleo, the chair of the St Paul's Carnival Committee, and Barbara, a participant in the very first St Paul's Carnival over 50 years ago came to present us with our award for coming FIRST PLACE in this year's procession. Our beautiful award will very soon take pride of place in our entrance foyer.

Performance at Temple Meads

Commuters were treated to a selection of festive songs performed by our Key Stage 1 pupils and accompanied by our Steel Pan band on Monday night. Many passengers joined in with our singing while they waited for their trains. Some of the songs came from our forthcoming Christmas Play which parents are invited to attend on Tuesday 16th December at 9.15 in our school hall.

Once again children were very well supported at an out of school hours event by our dedicated teaching staff. Thank you Miss Thompson, Miss Wilkins, Miss Adie, Miss Gundy, Miss Johnson, Miss Heppner, Miss Pearce, Miss Davies and Miss Hunter for your ongoing support for Cabot pupils.

Sunday Performance at St George's Hall Brandon Hill

Tonight's audience at St George's Hall has just been treated to a fantastic performance by Bristol Reggae Orchestra, accompanied by our very own Cabot pupils. Children sang and danced with support from a full orchestra of strings, brass, woodwind and percussion sections. There were especially composed pieces alongside orchestral versions of some reggae classics, including Bob Marley's Three Little Birds. Everyone in the audience rose to their feet and danced along.

Well done Cabot pupils. We are very proud of you. Thank you Miss Heppner for once again making sure our wonderful pupils are sharing their talents across the city. Thank you also to Mrs Redwood, Miss Hunter, Miss Huish and Mirs Cartlidge for ensuring the pupils got there safely and did their best.

Building Progress

Over the half term break the builders were busy working on the rendering outside the Year 2,3 and 4 classes. I am sure you'll agree it is a very smart finish.

More work has been done inside the building too. We are expecting to have our Art/DT room and music room finished very soon.

This is all good progress towards ensuring we have the very best building and resources from which we can provide the very best teaching for our children.

I have booked the new studio room for Tuesday 18th November at 9.00 am for a Parent Group meeting. I look forward to seeing you there.

New Website Sections

Dear Parents,

We have made several updates to the school website. There are now new sections with information about:

French
PE
The 2014 Curriculum

We also have a special section dedicated to Reading, our School Improvement Priority area for this year. This section also links to the Library. Your child can access our Junior Librarian progamme from here and review their library account.

My favourite update to the website is our link to a recording of our new Cabot Anthem. You can find it in the Performing Arts events section, or by clicking the link below.

Library Opening

Our Library is officially open!

Children gave a spectacular performance to our visiting dignitaries, including our MP and the deputy mayor.

The Bristol Post covered the event in the article below.

Best Wishes

PUPILS at Cabot Primary School are celebrating the opening of their new library.
The school in St Pauls has so far been without a dedicated library space, but now they have a new £35,000 facility housing story books, textbooks and iPads.
Gemma Davies, a reading recovery teacher, said: "This is a fantasticresource and opportunity for the children.
"Before we had the library, we had books in classrooms but no space for the children to go and read and research. It is brilliant to see it open.
"It has got brand new furniture, computers, places to sit and books for them, it's an amazing space. We are grateful to have it."
Around 190 children attend the school, which put aside part of its budget to turn the building into a library.
The school also has Reading Recovery teaching, an intervention scheme for children with reading difficulties.
Specially-trained teachers work with six-year-olds who are in the bottom 20 per cent of their class in terms of reading.
